5 Great Lounges in the Lower East Side | NYC

The Lower East Side is typically thought of as the stopping grounds of the working class—a bit gritty, and certainly not flashy or sophisticated. Yet there is a certain authenticity to this part of the city that gives it a panache all its own. Here are 5 lounges that you should check out to get that LES feel and have a great time!

1. Antler Bear & Wine Dispensary        If you’re looking for a great craft beer selection, this is the spot to stop. On Allen Street right above Delancy, Antler provides easy Friday night out. A rustic kind of anthropology vibe will have you not missing the hype at all, and instead enjoying a relaxing night with friends. Their prices are reasonable, and don’t stop at just beer, they also have an organic wine selection with some options on draft. They even have a back room with games and couches.

2. Back Room
This speakeasy, one of my personal favorites, is going to require some extra effort to locate. You have to go down a set of steps (next to Sunita Bar) and through an underground hallway to find this gem. The teacups used for serving drinks and live jazz music creates that old fashion feel. It is one of only two speakeasies that were still in operation in NYC during the prohibition, so soak yourself up some history this weekend and check it out.

3. Open House
Open House is the probably one of the chicest little lounges you’ll find on the L.E.S. Host a fashionable party without all the drama (contact Birthdays and Bottles to arrange). There’s even a secret dance floor at Open House, but space is limited, so be prepared to make new friends! The music is hoppin’ so this is a great place to get people together and let loose on the weekends.

3. Spitzer’s Corner
Spitzer’s Corner is at the crossing of Ludlow and Rivington, and they are a gastropub experience you won’t forget. Start your night out with delicious American food and your choice of 40 draft beers, wine, or mixed drinks. They are pretty much famous for their truffle mac and cheese, and they have a new Darkhorse Oatmeal Stout (which I’m dying to try). It might be an early evening stop though, considering that the open seating fills pretty quickly. It would also be a great spot for day drinking, if that’s your thing. It’s typically a pretty hoppin’ casual lounge.

5. M 1-5
Just outside the L.E.S., this bar & lounge is the perfect place to spend a weekend night with friends. Happy hour is from 4-10pm, which is ultra convenient. It’s a casual atmosphere, but it also has a club feel, dancing, and great tunes, but all without the cover charge. A varied crowd makes everyone feel like they belong. This spot is also a great place for hosting parties (contact Birthdays and Bottles to arrange). No pomp and circumstance, just go and have a great time at M1-5!

4. Le Reve— Midtown East
Our fourth venue is Le Reve. This place is one of the best for a Sunday night out. From 5pm to 4am guests can enjoy the Mediterranean décor and cuisine in this Arabian nights inspired hookah lounge. They have state-of-the-art sound systems, intelligent lighting, multiple plasmas and large projection screens and a stage for performances. Start off your culinary experience with their Three Way Hummus Tasting, complete with classic, chipotle, and cilantro hummus. Followed by a shawarma wrap or a specialty kebab and finish the meal with their decadent chocolate mousse. Pair your dishes with a cocktail like the Moroccantini— Stoli Orange, mint, Triple Sec, and cranberry juice— and Le Reve Hookah (mixed fruit) to complete your memorable Sunday night out.

5 Things You Must Know About Guest Lists in New York City

If you’re young and living in New York city, chances are you enjoy the night life. There are dozens, maybe even hundreds of nightclubs in NYC to let loose and have a good time at and one way to ensure your entrance to these clubs is to know the ins and outs of the guest lists. Here at Birthdays and Bottles, we’ve put together an extensive list of five tidbits of knowledge, crucial to New York city guest lists from the do’s and don’ts to how to get on them and other questions you’re dying to know!

1. Being on the guest list does not always guarantee admittance
Your name on the guest list is just one of many factors considered by the manager. Lounges in NYC are looking for crowds who add to the atmosphere and if your party is too large, you have a bad attitude, or the club is already too crowded then your name being on the guest list may not matter. It’s also important to know that not being on the guest list is not an automatic rejection at the club doors. If you look like someone who is going to bring the party with you to a club on a slow night, if you’re fun, and easy going, and if you look like you’re in it for the long haul, the club manager may still let you in. So to sum it up— being on the guest list does not make or break you.

2. How to get on the guest list
If you’re reading this article you’re probably thinking that going to an exclusive club and hoping they let you in because you look fun is not something you’re willing to test. You’re saying “but how do I get on a guest list?” Well you can use your connections with the owner or manager of a club— if you have them they’re a great asset that you should utilize. You can use a promoter however this option can be just as risky as hoping you get into the club without your name on the guest list. Promoters can be unreliable and sometimes they do not have the ability to persuade the manager enough to get just anyone into the club. The third, more reliable option, is to use a bottle service (like Birthdays and Bottles perhaps) that can help get you the night out you’ve always dreamed of. There are a handful of clubs that don’t really care whether you’re on a guest list; minimums are as high as $2K for a party of only 10 people.

3. Dress accordingly
It’s important to know that, whether or not you’re on the guest list, complying with the dress code is a must! Getting onto a guest list or getting access to an exclusive club is much easier if you look like you belong with the A-list guests. Do your research on the dress code of whichever club you’ll be attending but know that it’s generally expected that some effort was put into your attire.

4. Picking the right club
You’ll have an easier time getting onto the guest list of a club that fits your style and taste. Club owners and managers want people who make their club even more enjoyable so if you look for clubs that you’ll have fun at, the manager will be able to see that you’ll add to the vibe they’re going for. Make sure you research the types of crowds at any given club, the types of music they play, and the nights to be there. If you pick the right club for you, getting in will only be the beginning of a great night!

5. Who do you know?
Back in the day, everyone in a party had to be on the list. This is no longer the case! If you’re having a party (and say you used a bottle service to ensure getting on the guest list) your name is the only one that has to be on the list. Invite all your friends and their friends— even if you don’t know their names— because the only name that needs to be known is yours.
